Default Trailering

We have a 6 almost 7 month old filly. I was just wondering when I should teach her to load in the trailer. She is halter broken and leads and is pretty good at being tied. We have a new 4 horse trailer and I put her mama in it just to see if she might follow. She wanted to but didn't understand how to step up(she is also a pony and where she has to step up comes up to her knees). She got near and sniffed and got right to the edge but wouldnt step up. I didn't try to force her I knew that would end badly.

We don't have anywhere to go so it isn't imparative I teach her now (although I would love to save $50 on a ranch call from the vet LOL) I just don't really know when or where to start. We have been learning everything as we go since she was a surprise baby and have never trained a foal before.

A horse can be taught to trailer load at any age. I haven't had a foal in ages (or at least it feels like ages :) ) but my friend who has an approx 2 year old filly was taught how to trailer load at about 6 months to a year (not sure exactly). Her filly was tinnnnnny for her age and she finally is starting to look like a real horse.

Now would be a great time! Just make sure you only take her for trips that last 5-10 minutes at a time or so at first so that it won't be too hard on her wee little legs.

I wouldn't trailer her just yet...what I meant was trailer loading. First get her comfortable with the trailer and introduce it slowly so she doesn't have a bad experience. Get her so she can load by just pointing at the trailer. And then take her for short trips and slowly build it up
