I have a 5 year old mare that I take to ride with friends once a week. When I load her into the trailer she usually walks right in. She randomly will start flipping out in the trailer. Sometimes she will traile fine. Yesterday, I had just put her in the trailer and she started flipping out. She was almost sideways in the trailer leaning against the panel scrambling her hooves. I don't know why she is doing this. I trailer very safely and she has not had any traumatizing trailer rides. Does anybody know what I can do to ease her fear of the trailer?
Well I'd just spend a lot of time with the trailer. Especially when your going to trailer her somewhere, make sure she likes the trailer by giving her treats by it and lunging her around it just so she knows it's not a bad thing. Maybe if you do this like everytime you trailer her somewhere she won't be so bad.
do you travel her with a partition? if you do she maybe feels cramped and panics, try her with just the breast bar and tie her up with two ropes, one each side of her head collar, she will have more room to balance
Horses are naturally clostrophobic (don't think I spelled that correctly lol), so standing in a moving vehicle with a locked back door and thin rows is not their idea of a great time.
Try doing exercises with her that require her to be "pushed" through something. Walk her through two barrels that stand on either side of her, make her stand quitely and then back her through them. See if you can even make her walk backwards through them. You can do this with cones, you and the rail, or have someone else stand on the other side of her with their hand on her. The idea is to get her to understand that it is ok to be in tight spaces. She sounds like a great mare who is really trying to please you. Now you just need to reassure her by practicing these "squeezing" techniques with her and you should be golden!!!!
i think you should get a vet because you said he goes crazy and paws the ground with hoovs and such, well i know all trailers have mats in them but maybe double check the hooves before you trailer and keep him really calm, and you said even when your like on the road he trailers badley, maybe he is nervous, or something is like in the trailer and he spooking of it. Or maybe you should have a trailer buddy you, never know he could be lonley, or bored by himself.
Just wondering has this horse always floated in the direction of where the car is going..................or has she always been floated sideways, or has she always been trucked.
This may be your problem you say she tries to get sideways, she may be flipping out even beforehand. because she knows she can't go sideways.....just a thought.
You may need to start floating leasons all over again.
Ask your vet as well
good luck
