Trailering Question about Claustrophobia?

Last year when I tried to load my horse onto the trailer for a show, after a few attempts he finally loaded like a pro!(well, sort of). After we shut the back of the trailer door, before the car started moving, he went crazy and sat down in the trailer and scraped some skin off. If we didn't unload him he would have hurt himself more. He has loaded up on the trailer times before. But he was always moving around in it. I would like to start trailering him again especially if there is a emergency (and I would like to start showing him again). If it helps I have a 2 horse straight load trailer with divider. Any advice would help! Thanks!

Ah I see where I missed that now. Is your divider removable? Or do you have access to a larger stock type trailer.

He may be associating your small trailer with bad past experiences.

I have a gelding who will not safely load and trailer on a two horse anymore due to a trailer accident. He will jump right onto an open stock or larger trailer but not a two horse even with removed divider.

Trailering ? about Claustrophobia

To Texas lover, I hope thats correct! Regarding your horse that starts to scramble after loading- A couple suggestions to maybe try. Allow the horse to settle before tying them up and closing door. If they need to back out that's fine. This will give them the confidence to stay in, food or no food without you rushing to shut door. They feel less stressfull. Another tip is once you are driving, they seem to settle as they get their footing. Personally I don't dwell on the horses past accidents because I feel it may cause you to be too submissive, when they really just need a leader. I always make sure to work on this type of problem like I have all the time in the world. Hopefully you could understand what I was saying! A bit too wordy maybe.
