Trainers in upstate NY

Hi everyone,

I'm sure some of you have read my last post about my 5 year old mare that has gotten bad over the past couple of months. I would like you all to know that the chiropractor is coming out this Wednesday (2/8/12) to make sure that my tack is fitting her properly and that she is not in any pain. I need to rule out health issues before blaming it solely on behavioral problems.

I have had a trainer helping me for free. She does indeed know what she is doing (a lot of horse people around here know her and all say very good things about her...). She has been my coach since I started riding at 10 years old. However, I feel like she thinks I can do a lot of this stuff on my own but I simply am not comfortable doing it on my own yet. She comes out every once in a while if I am having a problem but I'd like to fix things before they become problems. Yesterday she was out and we solved a BIG issue with Cheyenne not moving from pressure and challenging people on the ground. Cheyenne is young, athletic, and almost too smart for her own good. She needs constant stimulation or else she gets bored. When she's bored she's unhappy and when she's unhappy she gets naughty.

I am looking for a trainer in upstate NY. I DO NOT want to send Cheyenne off to a trainer. To me, that accomplishes nothing -- the trainer will not be the one dealing with her when she is returned to me. I need someone who is willing to work with both Cheyenne and I and help us grow as PARTNERS. It'd be really beneficial to have someone telling us our mistakes and giving us something to work at each week. I'm looking for someone to come out potentially 2 or 3 times per week (or more/less depending on what they think we need). I am working with limited funds so I am hoping I can find someone who is willing to work out some sort of deal with me. However, I am willing to come up with the money somehow if I need to.

For those of you who commented on my last post, I know she is 5. I knew that when I bought her. I can recognize when I need help (part of my reason for asking questions on here!) and I will take the necessary steps to get the help that is needed. For those of you that said I should rethink if I really want to get involved in a project like this...I am determined. I know this is going to be a long, hard, frustrating road. On the other side, it's going to be extremely rewarding and an extremely beneficial learning experience. This is one of my passions and I am a fluent individual that is always looking for ways to improve myself. I am not afraid of difficult things.

I thank you all for the previous advice. If anyone knows of any trainers out this way please let me know.

I have searched all over Craigslist. A lot of boarding facilities say that they have training as well but it's always a side note at the bottom of the page kind of thing. I'd rather have someone who is advertising just training, you know?

I am 6 hours from NYC :(

Thank you so much! She should be a really fun project for a trainer who likes what they do. Well, *we* should be. She has loads of potential and I am willing to go whatever way with her a trainer sees fit. Willing to learn any discipline...

Thanks again

I only know people in the Canandaigua area.....Try the Wayne Monroe horse council. WMHC

I know that Westwind is great, but they are way down by me. I would try contacting the others that have shows with them, or call them and ask Kim or Lisa (probably Lisa) if she has any ideas The trainers I have used are expensive, and limited accessibility, but wonderful for general horsemanship. I learned a ton. THey are in Bloomfield, but in Florida at the moment, and only take horses in house for training.
