    Training a newly transported horse

Horse is coming from KY to So. Cal. Has had no travel life like a rodeo horse. I was thinking that I would send him straight to a trainer for one month of polishing up etc.. But now I'm told from a shipper that it can take a horse one month to get back to normal, so why do the training right away when a better result might occur after horse gets acclimated to new home. Any thoughts?

IMHO, if a horse needs a month to recover from a trip from KY to SoCal, then either the shipper did something wrong and injured/neglected the horse or the horse wasn't in the best of health to begin with.

A sound/healthy horse who doesn't get injured or sick on transport, IMHO, should only need a few days to get back to normal, if even that long.

I might give him a week off to graze, get acclimated, but after that it's back to work.

It would depend on how he did once he got off the trailer. I'd definitely go for a couple of days off anyhow.

More than anything, I expect there will be a big forage diet change moving from KY to CA. If it were my horse, I would watch it for a week to insure its digestion system hasn't been stressed out too much.
