On October 21st I got into a bad car accident and in the process I fractured my clavicle (collar bone) and my rotater bone. This caused me to have surgery and I received a screw and some wires to hold it all together. I am on the road to recovery and ever sense October 20th, I have not ridden my gelding. I most likely won't be able to ride him until late March or April. He is already a speedy guy and gets worked up when being ridden English/Jumping. He also has always had issues with picking up his right lead. I intend on having an equine chiropractor come and visit him over February break to see if it helps. But when we get back into riding, he and I are both going to be VERY rusty. I have already tried looking up ideas or actual riding/conditioning programs. Any ideas on where to view a program or ideas on what to do please let me know! :)

Have you thought about leasing him out while you're out to keep him active and fit? I've broken the clavicle.. No fun. I hope you heal up nicely and have a smooth recovery!

Training program? Well, depending on how out of shape he will be you're going to want to take it slow- 30 minute works with minimal long trot sessions. Work on perfecting up and downward transitions from walk to halt to trot to halt to walk to trot.. You catch my drift. Get solid at all of that and after a month or so of conditioning throw in some 2-3 minute sessions of cantering. If he gets worked up riding English and that is your main discipline, focus on keeping him calm and focused instead of tense and rushy.

Trouble picking up the right lead could be a number of things- and for that and all of the above issues mentioned I would definitely encourage getting an instructor to help oil the rusty comeback when you do start riding again. It will help all of it go much smoother.

Good luck feel better!
