training a yearling

My gelding is 1 year and 6 months old.

He leads nicely in walk gait only, he ties okay but not for long periods yet, he is willing to go in the trailer, he accepts being saddled, cinched up, and taking bit, he is willing to go over the bridge, tarp, and poles...

I am not sure what else to teach him... I won't lunge him until he is 2 years old also I won't start riding him until hes closer to 3 years old.

Any ideas or advice what should I work with my yearling to make his under saddle training easier?

Thanks

Pretty boy! I know you're not adding extra weight on top of it, but that saddle's huge for him, over his shoulders & I know how heavy Westerns can be...

You can basically teach/do anything & everything you'll want him to know when grown up, short of high impact & weightbearing stuff. The more the merrier, IMO. Hopefully he's great at yielding in various ways not, but if not I'd start with that. Take him out for trail walks, over obstacles, pony from another horse, take him into town or other places, to get used to new sights & sounds, ground drive him.... no reason, once he's yielding well to you up close, that you can't teach/reinforce this at a distance, such as lunging too, just stick to slow speeds & don't do endless circles for exercise.
