Training Your Horse for Halter Class

I would like to take Playboy

In to Halter classes because I think he would have a good chance at winning, and because he needs to go out more often. Anyway, the problem is that he will not walk/trot shoulder to shoulder with me. I've tried using a dressage whip, end of the lead rope, and lots of other things but he absolutely will not walk/trot next to me. He only wants to be behind me, not directly behind, off to the side, but still behind me.
Also whats a good way to teach them to square up. Just practice?
We have a lot to work on.

Exactly what classes are you considering? Western, English showmanship or some sort of sporthorse (lots of qualifications to enter one of these)?

Sorry, didn't think about all the kinds of halter classes...

I'm probably going to take him into 4-H with my other gelding for my last year, and then maybe go from there.
