    Trouble Trotting

A friend of my has a horse who is seeming having trouble collecting his trot. He takes this little jump forward in order for him to get into his trot. It is like he is trying to get his feet under him. He is very tense. He does fine when he lunged with a saddle on and only does this when he has a rider. Any advice?

There are many great threads on here about collection, written by some very experienced riders.

You mentioned that he was tense, maybe try aiming for him to relax and 'lower' his head a bit. Reward the little things, when he does go well make it obvious to him that it is correct. A horse needs to be willing and comfortable before they will work forward.
