It's funny because actually it's MOST people that start out Western and eventually go to English - Western is just often the natural first choice for a child as people view it as "safer". It's much more rare to find someone who started English and then went to Western.

I learned english first, and then learned western. My little sister is learning english first as well. I tend to notice that it's harder to go from the western saddle to the english saddle (not that it's impossible, just usually is more uncomfortable or "weird" to the rider). My little cousin is just starting to ride-she's learning western first. I had her use my english saddle a couple weeks ago so she could feel it out and she's already saying it's uncomfortable -.- now I make her use it everytime she rides with me ;p

I have no doubt that the western rider grew up riding dressage or english. Isn't that Germany? Or the Netherlands? However, there is a HUGE community of folks in Europe who think riding western is exotic and pay a fortune for fancy tack and well trained quarter horses. They compete at reining at world class levels, too. I thought that western rider had a lovely seat and the quietest "feel" for the horse. He was great!
