What to send going into training

I'll be sending my horse off for 30 days training at the end of this month. It is a local trainer so I can watch and keep involved. He's away at the moment and there was one thing I didn't discuss with him, but what do I send with the horse typically? I have never really found a saddle that really fits him nicely,...will trainers typically use their own? I will discuss everything with trainer when he gets back, but just thought I would put this out here to everyone. Anyway, what do you generally send with a horse??

I am a trainer, and I usually don't get anything from the owners except occasionally a halter that the horse was wearing when it arrived.

IMHO, it would just be too difficult to keep up with all the stuff if owners shipped all kinds of tack with their horse off to training. Just for me, I've got 5 saddles, about 25 halters, and well over 30 bridle/bit combinations, not counting the different pads I use to modify saddle fit if I end up with a horse that doesn't fit my saddle just right.

A good trainer will have just about everything they need to fit just about any horse...or the means to get what they need without borrowing from the owner of the horse.

Of course, it's something entirely different if you have some tack that you want to use and the trainer doesn't have it. I've done that several times, where an owner will show up to pick up their horse with entirely new tack; saddle, pad, bridle, bit, etc. In that instance, I will take all the tack, make sure it's adjusted and fits properly, then I will put the first ride on the horse in the new tack just to ensure that the difference isn't going to surprise the horse into misbehavior.

I have worked for trainers and have done some training myself.

Trainers typically use all their own tack/equipment (saddles, pads, bridles, bits, boots, etc.)

The only thing I would recommend sending is a halter/lead, a blanket in case one is needed and any special meds and/or supplements that your horse may be on. I also send a copy of vaccinations/vet records, deworming records and farrier records as well as an emergency card containing emergency contacts of yourself, your work, your family, your preferred vet, shoer, etc in case an emergency arises.

Everything else should be provided.

Yup-Halter, leadline (since he had to wear something in the trailer when the trainer picked him up.....) and blanket if appropriate. I specifically asked my trainer and he said just what smrobs did. Easier to not have to keep track of everyones crap. They just use theirs. But-when I went to ride-I did bring my own saddle-used their bridle until I knew what bit they wanted (after about 6 months).

When I was going to send my horse for saddle work all she wanted was the horse. She too has enough tack to open a tack store. Most trainers have three or four horses on the go each day so keeping track of tack could turn into a nightmare.
