Will not canter

Okay, so I am training my four year old gelding. He's totally chill when I ride him in a saddle, but as soon as we go bareback its like I'm not even there.

He will walk/trot/legyeild perfectly bareback, but as soon as I ask him to canter, he freaks. I have a good seat, and my aids are clear before you go off about that.

I ride him in a regular French Link Snaffle, and he seems to respect it well.

The thing is, today I rode him bareback, and he did everything but canter. So I got off, and he wouldn't canter on the lunge. So I un hooked him and free lunged him, and he wouldn't canter free lunging.

He normally does all this stuff for me, but today he just wouldn't canter. I checked for injuries, and he didn't seem to have any open wounds, I also check to see if he was sore on any of his legs, and he held weight fine on all four.

I'm not sure whats going on with him, so im asking for your help.

Maybe you should have an equine chiropractor look at him. Just a thought.

Definately sounds like something physical. I'm about 98% sure it is by what you've described. Give him a few days off and try again. If he still refuses, call a vet.
