Working two horses together.

I am seeking some advice on working with two geldings. My boy is 20, and while he still goes, I am trying to lighten his work load a little. I have been riding a 10 yr old mustang gelding, and he is great to work with, as long as my gelding isn't around. The mustang isn't the herd boss, but he will go out of his way to run my gelding, ears pinned and teeth bared. He has shunned my boy from the herd, and will not let him near the other horses. I catch him to ride, and m. Gelding follows nickering. My gelding wants to work, and so does the mustang, but I can only ride one a day. I am wanting to ride one and pony the other when I do trails, bit have not attempted yet because of the way the mustang acts towards my boy. Is there something I can do to bring peace between the two, or is this a lost cause?

Not sure what your "herd" consists of but if there was any mares in with the geldings I would sort them out. Gelding with geldings, mares with mares. That will help the pasture situation.

As far as ponying and riding the other, it doesn't make one bit of difference about herd hierarchy when it comes time to go to work.
If your mustang wants to kick the crap out of your older horse while ponying him- whoop his butt. He needs to learn that is unacceptable while you are around and working with either one of them.

I agree with cowchick, you are in control so the mustang should be concentrations on you and not on your older horse.
