Daughters first lesson. I'm so proud!

My daughter had her very first riding lesson on Saturday and I am just so proud of her. I knew she would do well but she did so much better than I was even expecting. Hunter is 8 years old, she has asthma, so any sports that require her to move around a lot are pretty much out of the question, especially in such a dusty state. Horseback riding turned out to be a good match for her. She never even had her feet in the stirrups because they don't quite reach yet, but her balance was perfect the whole time. I was a little surprised when she had her trot. I didn't think she would for her first lesson, she's only ever walked while being led. She never grabbed the horn, she only put her hands down when Sky would stop. She held on to the reins like a champ.

I took some video when I noticed she was trotting and I just had to share. You can't see in the video but she has a huge smile on her face while she's trotting.

What a good little girl :) That's a big trot for a first timer to sit! She's doing great though!

Looks like a great match! I love a coach that puts beginners on the lunge to establish balance at the gaits. The horse is just perfect for her and you're right - your daughter is doing SO well!

Congrats, Proud Mommy!

Thanks guys! Sky is my horse but I knew she could handle this. She's only 7 but she has such a good mind. Sky did throw her head a lot at a walk. Im guessing she's not used to kids riding her and the mixed signals were bugging her a bit.

As a riding instructor, I just want to say how happy I am to see her in a helmet! You go mama. I also have asthma, so I can relate, but I can still work myself into a wheeze riding. That's awesome though, she's doing great. They make kiddie stirrups that hang on the horn so she can have stirrups she can reach.

Yeah a helmet was a must and I wasn't going to go with a flimsy bike helmet like I've seen so many parents do. I splurged on a good one. Her head is so much more important to me than my own. I don't wear one at all.

Good for both of you!

I have exercise induced asthma. I went on Singulair and unless I'm REALLY pushing hard, I don't have any asthma symptoms anymore.

Good for her! Looks like she was having heaps of fun (lovely horse too :).)

I have asthma too, annoys the heck outta me and get it from dust, a cold, nature, running, swimming (that's a pain because you can't breathe underwater and can only quickly gasp and not get anything in: 'Swim faster!' 'Could YOU if you had no air?!') so I feel her pain. Oddly, horse riding doesn't really make me wheeze much at all despite the dust and the horses and exercise I would usually react to.

I have asthma but riding has never brought it out. Running does.. which is why I don't run.

I just have an aversion to running but no excuse other than laziness

She did great Whisper! I swear I get more enjoyment out of my kiddie riding than I do myself now. The sense of pride I get when she does something new - this weekend she took it upon herself to finally get her act together with her rising trot! Yay! Hahaha!
