Before anyone starts ranting about the size of the rider on a donkey, I will say the donkeys/burros are able to carry far larger loads than horses. They are similar to shetland ponies in this regard, where men ride them on the moors for hours with no problems.

I spent time in Greece and saw many a burro carry large loads up steep trails for miles with no ill effects. I knew one burro that was almost 30 that had been doing this all his life, before being retired, and he was as sound as ever.

Illustrative of what I am saying....
