Buying from across the country

If you bought a horse you saw online that was across the country or just in another state that you had to have it transported how did you pay for the horse? What precautions can you take when doing this? Is there a safe way so that they don't take your money and run?

Most people that haul horses charge $0.50 - $1 a mile, so transporting could be very expensive. I would make sure before you buy the horse you go and see the horse in person and GET A VET CHECK! It may be more money now but you want to make sure that the horse doesnt have any underlying problems that will cost you a ton of money in the long run. You could pay for the horse with cashiers checks, cash, or regular checks. You may want to make an agreement that you will pay for the horse apon its arrival. You also should have some sort of contract that is signed to prevent disputes.

Oh I know I'm not doing this......well I was a while ago but I had a vet exam done and the horse turned out to be a no go so I would never buy sight unseen without first having a vet check :)

I was just wondering money wise how you make sure they don't take your money and run.

I asked for recomendations and read those posted when others asked. FYI I always recomend Hauled Wright first, Joe Stark of Stark Haven second, and I've never used them but have heard lots of recomendations for Sharway.
