Getting a mare from a bad situation

Okay, this is a dun quarter horse mare (sorry I don't have any pictures) She came from an abusive home a couple years ago along with her sister, she was scared and distrusting of humans and it took her longer to come around than her sister. Eventually she was broke to ride again and foaled out a pinto baby.
I don't know how much she's been worked with over the past year or so. Right now she's living with a woman I know that keeps horses, and she isn't happy there. Its not adequate for her, and I want her. I want to help and change her situation. I don't even do quarter horses and western riding any more, but I WANT to help this amazing mare.
I guess the first step is to ask if my friend is interested in selling her, and try to get some history on her.

If the horse is western & you ride Enlgihs, you can always try to train her into English; it isnt' that different.
