    Good deal?

Hello! Today I started taking horseback riding lessons, and as I was about to leave, the owner of the stable informed me that she was going to be selling most of her horses in August. One of those horses happened to be the horse I was riding, and I'd like to know if it's worth it to buy her.
    What I do know about the horse (since I've only seen her once, will be updated);
    AQH
    Mare
Supposedly 25 years old, though she shows no signs of old age
    Being sold for $600
    Comes with tack
    Fully trained
Now I won't be the one making the decision (my parents will), but I'd like to get some input from those who have experience with horses :)

A 25 year old horse probably does not have very much riding life left, and will have to be retired soon. Elderly horses can have much higher costs due to health problems. I probably would not do it unless I had the pasture space to retire horses or endless money. You might only ride this horse for 6 months before she's not sound any more, but she might live a long time. My neighbor has regularly had horses live in to their mid 30's, but rarely ridden them past their early 20's. I think it's too much of a gamble, particularly if you're a new horse owner and you don't know this horse well. Could you afford to keep this one as a pet and another horse to ride as she gets older?

    600 for a 25 year old horse?

My aunt set it in my parents head that they should never buy a horse under 12 years old-- since then they thought buying the oldest horse possible would work-- ever since they would try to buy me horses in their 20s-- I tried to tell them that a horse that old couldnt handle 10+ hours 6 days a week hard as they could go-- I never had a horse to call 'my own' just broke or fixed problem horses so I could be around them.

I will say its smarter to wait and try out other horses before you buy.. my opinion.

Viranh - She wouldn't be on our property (she would be boarded), so unfortunately no.

Toto - I'm planning on doing that, hopefully I'll find another that is a good match for me c:

    .

Some may disagree with me, but I would never pay anything for a 25 YO Horse.

Around my area, they give them away all the time for free at that age, even when they are very well trained.

Vet costs for an older Horse can break the bank, JMO

Agreed. The first horse I leased (also a QH mare) was about that age, and she was going strong... until one day she wasn't. They retired her and within a year she died.

A 25 year old horse might go another 10 years being able to be ridden or 10 weeks, it's quite a gamble. I don't know why anyone would consider selling a 25 yr old schoolmaster, they deserve a well planned out retirement home on a pasture until then, a free lease where they can be exercised.

Alright guys, thanks for all your help :) When she sells the horses I'll be sure to look at the others.
