Looking for a horse in San diego, CA

Im new to the forum, so first Id like to introduce myself. My name is Jade and I live in San Diego, CA. My husband is Active Duty Navy, and currently on deployment. He will be back in May. We miss him :(
To the point....I am looking for a good beginners horse for myself and my 10 yr old daughter to add to our family. We have been looking for one for about 6 months, but have come up empty for "The one". We have both been in the saddle many times, but have no business calling ourselves advanced beginners as there is MUCH we do not know. We are looking for a "Bombproof" and that is used knowing there really is no "Bombproof" but you know what I mean by using it. Gender is not that important, calm, quiet, and easy keeper. Not elderly so around 10 ish yrs old. Something that will be patient, kid safe, and teach us. Primarily, we would like a pet, that we can love and learn with, and improve our riding skills. Not looking for a dressage or hunter/jumper, although as my little one gets better, that may be something she would become interested in. Sound, safe, and not more than 15 hands. Anyone?

Thank you for the welcome. I think the bay area is a little far for me. I have been looking on craigslist, but so far all the horses I've gone to see seem a little more on the intermediate side.

It's not only bay area, it's just about all Cali. I think they even have a SoCal sister site.

When I first got here from Europe I had no clue about the dimensions . Thanks to Google maps I learned quite quickly that I need to get used to going 100 miles means nothing here

Are you east San Diego or North San Diego? There is a really good riding school with very sweet well cared for horses that I know of in Poway. There are also many places in Lakeside, Ramona, and also going North, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe. There are also some in Imperial Beach if you are more south.

Honestly if I were you, I would go see the ranch, and stables and find out about leasing a horse for now. You can lease a good horse for as little as 150 a month out here and some people even do feed leases. I think that would be a good way to start.

Just my opinion. But by taking lessons and/ or leasing a horse it gives you time to get aquainted with different horse people and the area and the horses. Often you will find out word of mouth from people about good horses or you can even try to buy the horse you have leased if you like them.

Have you looked on dreamhorse?How far are you willing to travel? There are a lot of horses in the Riverside area, Temucula, and, as already mentioned, Poway.
