thank you so much for all the input. Most of my experience is with quarter horse mixes. (ie owned a 1/4 X Arab and 1/4 x Hanoverian.) Although I wouldn't trade Cartouche for anything in the world. My business partner, Ash and I are looking for a new venture. In Alberta our market if flooded with Quarter horses, Paints, Appaloosas and Morgans.

The ideas for the ranch are not solid on the path we choose to take. We want to ask the questions to better refine where we will go instead of floundering in the dark.
as for the breed we are looking for something that would be hardy in northern Alberta winters and good in the mountains. a friend of mine has a rescued mustang that I just adore and I swear this little guy runs circles around our horses right throught to day 4 on our mountain trips. He just always seems spunky and happy to be on the move. I thought at first that it was just this particular gelding but met two mustangs in cross country endurance that were just the same and I really like the spunk.

Endurance and western riding will be most of our plans for the ranch and some breeding but I would much rather find homes for animals in need instead of adding to that number.

I hope that helps a bit to describe better what we are looking for. I will contact the adoption agencies and Canadian officials about what I need to do to bring horses across the border. as for the fences our Canadian stallion is an escape artist and having owned cattle in the past we still have a stock trailer which I just finished welding new fenders onto and fixed the back door from an incident with a very angry bull. (I don't miss cattle at all)..

thanks again..

Yay! My area of expertise, I can actually help answer a question. Mustangs are great horses, but most of them are "wild" when you adopt them unless they were surrendered to you. They require persistent training, and I have found that they tend to have a mind of their own. I got my first Mustang two years ago, he was three. You could barely get on him, he would bolt, buck, rear, wouldn't stay on the rail (later on), would dart away, barn sour, everything. Now, he is my perfect little pony and we are happily registered in local shows.

I actually may be selling that very pony, that's another thing, Mustangs are very short, usually not exceed 14.3hh, unless mixed with something else. My pony is GORGEOUS, he's a perfect, flawless example of a Buckskin and he is the sweetest Gelding you'll meet! He jumps up to 3"3 with the right person on his back! :)
