As someone who has owned Horses since they were 5, it is always very nice but I would get as many lessons under your belt as you can, then volunteer at a barn where you can take lessons, that way you can choose your lesson horse and be around him/her a lot. I know everyone wants to get the horse but get the experience first. It really pays off. I'm about to sell my horse so I can have the time and money to take more lessons.

That's why I want to do a lease, to get more experience. You can't learn anything about horses except how to ride, groom, and tack up at lessons. And I've tried volunteering at a couple places, but most don't really need help and because of the economy they want money for lessons, not a work exchange. And probably since you've owned horses since you were 5, you don't really realize exactly how lucky you are or what it's like not to have any horse connections or have parents that don't particularly care about horses. Everything I've ever had to do with horses I've had to pay for myself.

Okay, there are plenty of ways to learn from a stable. You don't even have to do lessons. Just work a few days a week, you learn a lot. Right now I work 13 hour days 3 days a week. And I don't get free lessons. I get to learn about what it takes to own and run a successful barn. and eventually you might get some lessons. But you will get REAL experience. And it is all about being persistent and showing that you want it.
And just cause I started owning at 5 does NOT mean I did not work my butt of to have the horses and experiences I have had.
