Older Percheron Gelding in Eastern PA Noah is a 16.2 h percheron gelding, in his late 20's that has been a workhorse, trail horse his whole life. He spent the last year working at a resort in the poconos, giving 4 trail rides a day to vacationers, 7 days a week. He is a great bombproof trail horse and gorgeous pasture companion, however he has gotten much stronger when handling on the ground. I purchased him just about six weeks ago, fairly underweight, as a first horse to get back into horses after 10 horseless years. He was extremely quiet and gentle both on the ground and under saddle. When the dentist came out, we found out that he was MUCH older than what the sellers (and their vet) told us. So, he was going to be my old man that could be spoiled and loved into retirement. However, as we got his weight up and put him on a joint supplement, he became quite pushy and forward when handled on the ground. He is still the same gentle guy under saddle (with a nicer trot) but does not exactly want to be loved and spoiled. He does not enjoy standing to be groomed (will stand quiet if as long as there is hay to eat while he is tied), but does really well for anyone who wants to grab him out of the field and put him right to work. I need to find him a home to be a combo companion horse / hubby's trail horse.
He's great with other horses, both mares and geldings, and tends to be towards the bottom of the herd. He is healthy, barefoot (farrier has been out twice with no problems), and definately doesn't have a problem putting on and keeping on weight! We had the dentist out to check his teeth and they are small, but good as well.
I am broken hearted and fear that I am failing him, but I have realized that I have a horse that I am unable to do either dressage lessons with, or spoil and love in the barn. I retain the option of sending him back to his previous owner, but I would prefer to rehome him to someone who will take better care of him and lessen the chance of him ending up at auction. I work full-time and go to school part-time. I just don't have enough time or knowledge to spend retraining his ground manners. UTD on rabies, tetnus & coggins. |
