I heard back from the owner of this absolutely gorgeous OTTB mare, and she's willing to negotiate on the price a little bit. So, since that might possibly make her an option, I was wondering if you guys could look at this video and critique her movement and such? I'll likely send a link to my trainer too, but only after I've discussed it with my dad first.. although I'm waiting to hear back from the owner/trainer to see how much she'll negotiate.
It would have been nice to seen how she works without the bungee chords, she could run around with her nose in the air without them! She doesn't step through very well in trot, or she doesn't from what that video shows. Try asking the seller for a video without the chords as the mare might step under herself and overtrack without the chords. She picked up canter twice on the wrong lead which could indicate a muscular inbalance where her outside rear (I think it was left rear in this video) leg is weaker so she prefers to use her stronger leg to push into canter. It could also just be inexperience which will be corrected as she gets ridden more.
She looks very honest and willing to work though, perhaps a little green at times but thats to be expected on a 5 yr old! Looks well started and but still a project. Beautiful colour, nice conformation and doesn't seem antsy or fresh to ride. Worth a try I'd say!!
Yeah, I really don't mind having to put more work on a horse.. it's mainly why I want to find a younger one. She did make a few mistakes, but nothing that can't be fixed. Posted via Mobile Device
I like her from what I can see. Is that a tie down? Sorry don't know much about English riding but I can see she is over bending the horse Posted via Mobile Device
I felt like I was watching a Charlie Chaplin movie. Very rushed trot, the poor horse was struggling with her face the entire time.. not really relaxed.
I think without all the bungees on her, you'd definitely have to restart her on contact and getting her own balance.. especially with that rushing. But I feel with the horse she would be a very nice mount.
Just remember to test ride, get a video, and a PPE!
Unfortunately, I wouldn't really be able to do a test ride since she'd be a few provinces away. It's why I'm relying a lot of my trainer's opinion on what horse to go for. Although, I'm sure that she could help me find a horse in our province (since I'm sure half the horses aren't put online) if I couldn't find one that she also approved up. I'm just kind of picky about appearances, as well as personalities. I want a mare, which I won't likely sway on, and I like horses with a bit of chrome.. and I don't like paints in the slightest. Plus I'd need one who was at least 15.3hh to 16.0hh.
I'd be willing to put time into more training though, I'm not looking for an already completely trained horse who needs zero work.
I'm assuming it's a martingale of sorts, although I'm sure that if I worked on her frame more, it wouldn't eventually be necessary. I'm still talking with the owner about negotiating on the price and I'm probably gonna send the video to my trainer. Hopefully she convinces my dad that this horse has lots of potential and would be very well worth it. The woman wants $5000 for her, but she's willing to negotiate and I think Laura will help me figure out what's fair and make an offer on her. I did promise her that the mare would continue to be well-loved and I'd continue to advance her training.. which I definitely can say with certainty. I've been so excited over the possibility for a horse ever since my dad said he'd consider it. I just need to find a horse that doesn't cost too much since my dad isn't a horse person and doesn't want to spend a whole lot. I'd have to pay for shipping on this mare although it should only be $500.. so hopefully the woman can lower the price a bit.
I'd definitely get a PPE (although I know the horse has seen a vet after the ad was posted because the woman said the vet came to see the horse and confirmed the height at 15.3hh). I believe that the person riding her was just helping out the seller, so I'm definitely going to get more information on the tack she wears and why.
I do agree with a lot of the issues having to do with the tack and rider. Especially the martingale. It just looked like the horse was fighting it, and I think without it, and with consistent, soft contact.. then it would eventually learn to give into light hand pressure and wouldn't even need a martingale.
ETA: The seller did say that she was a bit sickle hocked, but the vet said only very slightly, and no issues with clubfoot or anything of the sort. Although I know that she was racing up until 2010 so I'm going to research more of the possible issues associated with that. I highly doubt that I'll end up getting her, but research doesn't hurt. It doesn't help that she's pretty much my dream horse. The picture on the ad was horrible (which the seller said she did on purpose although I forget her reason) but I saw the star and snip and had to e-mail her. I absolutely love horses with a snip and star, especially bays.
I also noticed (although maybe my eyes are just messing up) that the rider is on the wrong diagonal at the trot.. so I think with a good rider who will put the time into her, this mare could turn into a great horse.
I know, I'm really just trying to find a horse that will be the whole package, although is requiring a bit of training. I'm definitely going to look for a horse with nice conformation (preferably conformation that will help them excel in hunters), a nice personality with a good work ethic, and the potential. (and are showing it) I also want a mare who is around 15.3hh to 16.0hh. Those are my only real must-haves.
I do have some "superficial" wants though, although I wouldn't buy my absolute "dream horse" if it was cow hocked, was a total grump and wasn't sound nor could it compete in jumping eventually. I just have preferences. I'd prefer either a dark bay or bay mare (or even black) with a bit of chrome.
Request a vid from the seller, but ask for the horse to be ridden without a martingale, I would like to see if she engages & rounds better without being forced. From what I see, a decent horse, but I need to see how much babysitting was done, right now she is compressed from the front & no rear end energy. Sometimes, if ridden past the point of "get the idea", to "I need this to brace", it takes a good while to teach proper collection. That will make your job much harder.
