I'm debating on whether or not i want to sell him. I've had Shane for almost 5 years now and he was a rescue . We've won many times and he's taken me all the way up to my capabilities, until i outgrew him. I love this pony so much. I've sold other horses, but he's just been the biggest part of my life since i bought him. I've never ever considered selling him until now.

I'm 18 and moved out of my parents house.. i live down in NC with my cousin and aunt and i recently bought a horse down here. He's only 2 years old and is an ottb. ANYWAYS .. shane's in NJ and out on lease to a little girl on an amazing 1.5 million dollar property. He's going to get shown and given a pretty great life. But i don't want to lose him in the future. So i was considering selling him to her now and buying him back later.. in a contract that he's returned to me.

What do you think he's worth - out of curiousity & what's your opinions?

Shane is a 10 year old, 13.2hh Mustang. He's done everything from walk / trot with a 2 year old little girl, to Children's hunter with me. He's shown hunters, jumpers and barrel racing (game shows). Never second guesses his rider and will pack anybody over any jump. He's super friendly, loves attention, and would be the head of any lesson program. He's a barn favorite and has been shown at many local and traveled shows. Placing high in ribbons almost everytime. He's awesome for a first time rider, but good enough to keep up with an experienced one as well.

Regardless of what he's actually worth, nobody in their right mind would agree to a contract like that.

If you SELL something you don't own it any longer, and have no right to say what does or doesn't happen to it after you've accepted money for it.

If you want to keep the pony, continue to lease him. You don't get to take money for selling something, and then come back later and say you want it back.

Either sell the pony free and clear, or continue to long-term lease him out.

my bad on the proof..
another thing is (which i will edit). i'd buy him back after she outgrows him. i'd sell her to him for free, or a dollar. that we've both agreed on. i've been leasing him out now and it's been a mess. i can't pay his bills and my new horses and somehow i'm still stuck paying them - 500 miles away. i meant in terms of how much i'd sell him for if i put him up on a website or something. Just seeing everyone's view was.. hence why i said i was curious.

So why dont you draw up a contract for a free lease. Where they pay you nothing, but in return are responsible for any and all care of the horse (vet, farrier, yearly shots, worming... everything). That way, he is still "yours" without you having to pay for him.
We have done this quite a few times... and it has worked out great. We usually will have the horse appraised as well, and in the contract say... if the horse dies of any sort of neglegance, the lessee is required to pay us that amount.

**EDIT... me and AlwaysBehind are on the same page at the same time. haha.

that's the problem.. they want to lease him and take lessons on him. but some how i'm stuck paying his bills (expect board) . i don't see how this is rational.. in any way. it's so frustrating and that's why i need advice. i have a trailer.. in NJ & it needs all new tires and a light fixed, but i live way too far away to bring that risk down here with my pride and joy in it..

i'm reposting this.. so post all replies on the other one :)

Why are you reposting?

Have you talked to them about the bills you are having to pay? Do you have a lease contract?

i have talked to them. their reasoning is complicated. they want me to pay his bills, but get free board. yet i can't move him down here because the kids are all attached to him and that's just unfair. plus i don't have a trailer working right now to send him on his way either. i would love to know why they can't just free lease him and pay for him.. what's the difference between that and owning him.. if i get him back regardless? it's frustrating and stressing me out beyond belief..

i agree with that .. just wanted to see if i was missing something i guess. my cousin made a point that it's like leasing a car. does the car dealership pay for your gas ?

Make up your lease contract with everything covered, who pays vet bills, board, etc. Give them a copy and you hold a copy. Give them 30 days to make the decision. Either 1) They agree to the terms of the lease or 2) They buy him outright on an agreed upon price, with right of first refusal if ever they decide to sell him.

If these people do own a 1.5 million dollar property a little horse like yours isn't going to be more than a drop in the bucket price wise or upkeep. If he is going to be a burden to them by their paying for what you are asking you dont' want him with them anyway. Obviously there is something wrong in their paradise if they can't afford him.

If they don't agree you have 30 days to find some way to get him down with you and then you can sell him, maybe advertise him in the area you live in now as well as where he is at. If he is a well broke, show/jumping quality animal I would think there are many kids out there whos parents would be more than willing to accept your terms. You have the advantage in the fact you have a well broke animal and those animals always retain their value.

Thanks Macslady, i agree with what you said completely. Shane doesn't have perfect confirmation, but he's got so much talent. I've outgrown him both in size and ability, but for how willing and easy he is.. it shouldn't be hard to find a leaser for him.

Hes very cute. Someone needs to know how to apply leg boots correctly there very sloppyly applied. I have heard of someone selling a horse to someone for a dollar with contract of if the new owner ever sold in the future that the old owner would have first chance in buying the horse back

Agreed with other posters re: the situation. Regarding the price on him, he's a packer, and if he can get his permanent pony card (under 13.3hh) then he's going to ask a decent price, his only drawback is his breed. I'd guess around $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the quality of his stride and jump.

thanks guys. i know the mustang is a problem. but you would never know. he gets ALMOST all his distances. I get in his way and ride him to the fence, you really have to just let him do it. He gets auto changes and he has a very decent stride. He gets pony strides (obviously) but you can push him and hold him and he adjusts very well. He's got enough scope to clear 4ft. (last picture)
