Our plan is to take lessons this summer (we have both ridden horses in the past and Helena has owned horses previously but, my skills are not great and she wants refresher/additional) on riding and horse care. Then in the fall/winter begin looking for horses (approximately 6-8 months from now). We plan to board locally so we can groom/walk the horses daily and will take lessons at the BO we will be boarding at.
Our thoughts on horses are: Myself - Quarterhorse or maybe a Paint, Helena - she is thinking a Gypsy. We will only do Trail riding so no special training or jumping. We expect the horses to be 10-15 years old.
Our planned budget (for upfront costs only, not monthly mainenance fees):
Horses - $4,000 for the 2 horses
Tack - $2,000 for the 2 of us including saddles
Emergency care savings - $2,000
As a side:
Boarding fees - $350 ea. ($700 total)
Farrier fees - $120 total
Supplements, etc - $100
What are your thoughts on our planed budget? This also does not include the lessons throughout the summer and into next year. I am sure there will be some trainer fees in there as well.
