Thinking of selling...*image heavy*

I've been playing around with this thought for several months now.
I love Vega, but at times i feel we don't mix well. I love her to pieces, but at times i think she'd so better with someone else.
I am also curious as to what you think I'd get for her.

Age: 5 years old (born March 13, 2003)
Breed: appaloosa
Sex: mare
Height: I'm not sure, i think 15.2-15.3
Hypp N/H
-Ridden english/western, although she'd need a refresher in -western.
-She has bucked/reared (small rears though) after sitting and then going back to being ridden. She has not reared since last summer, though she does buck when being lunged
-Has jumped up to 1 foot.
-She needs a confident/experienced rider, though she has given pony rides before.
-She stands for vet/farrier.
-She's barefoot
-Good in cross ties
-I haven't clipped her, so i don't know how good she is with that
-Stands tied to be bathed
-Can be marish.

If you need/want anything else, just ask.

It's kinda hard with an N/H mare - most people wouldn't want to breed her, therefore it would lower her price. She is a nice looking mare though, and depending on her training and ability, I would say $1,000-$2500 - again, it also depends on which part of the country you're in, and how the economy is going... I would put her up on equine.com, dreamhorse.com ect if you are ready to do it...

I was thinking of putting her up there, but i don't want someone to get really interested if i'm not ready to sell. I'm still deciding.

I'm in NJ and I also paid 4500 for her a year ago. Since then i have done a lot of ground work with her and ridden her as well.
She has definitely improved and is still improving.

She has also never shown any signs of hypp and some people will get NH mares and breed them.

This is her pedigree

Not sure if that makes a difference in her price.

thanks Ginger :)

Though i don't think I'm selling her. I asked my fiance if it was fair to Vega (me not being able to get up there as much as i want) but we talked things though, and she's still getting turn out, food, water and shelter, and that we've just fallen on a rough time.
Once we get a house and move the horses, it will be a different story.
But i'd still like to know how much she's worth :)

Honestly, get her going well under saddle again, and I could see her being worth $5000 easy.

In all honesty, half of the battle is marketing her towards a certain audience; if you get her going, and market her well, people are willing to pay for quality.
I remember hearing the VP of Starbucks saying "we buy cheap beans and mark the price up... people will pay $5 for a cup of coffee because they think they're getting a good quality product."
When I was young and naive, I thought $5000 for any horse was cheap... you have to market your horse to that audience ;)

Thanks Allie.

Since yesterday the weather turned all yucky, I'm going up there today. Rain or shine, I'm going up there and working with her. I made a promise to myself.

I do think that you could get any reasonable price for a horse as long as you market it to the correct audience. If I need help, Allie, I'm asking you for help :D

I didn't mean to offend anyone, just wanted to point out that she has a 50% chance of passing on the HYPP gene... People around here are very wary because of the huge amount of horses that have had to be put down because of HYPP positive.

She's a very lovely horse, and I'm sure everything will work out for you :)

You didn't offend me. If i would have known she was positive before buying her, i would have passed. I know a lot of people will pass on a horse just because they are n/h, and honestly, I don't blame them. But i'm sure there are som ApHC or AQHA people out there that would chose a N/H horse over a N/N horse just because they'd get the muscle definition.

If i could, I'd spay her so she'd never have the chance to pass on the disease.

If you are serious about it, talk to your vet, spaying horses is an option. It's expensive, but it's available. Although, that might turn some people off... I have no idea, I've never encountered it before, I just wanted to let you know that spaying horses isn't impossible

I know it's not impossible, but i don't want to have to put her though anything that's unnessecary. What i mean by "if i could" i meant money wise.

I know spaying a dog is more expensive than neutering a dog, so i can only imagine how much it would be to spay a horse.

Though i do agree that her price would drop quite a bit.

She'll just have to be content with Gem being her husband and know that they'll never be able to have kids

She does not like to buck first of all. When she sits for a while and you just jump right on, she'll throw a little buck. Nothing that will throw you off. When you lunge, if she spooks at all, she'll let out a buck. But what 5 year old horse wouldn't?

I think she's built pretty well, but each their own.

And as for her being marish, what do you expect from a mare? It's just like women, not every woman is going to be normal when she has her period. Some can witchy, others want to eat a bowl of ice cream and watch movies all day. You can't expect horses to be perfect.

And i honestly take the $800 as an insult!

any horse can throw a buck....just because Vega does doesn't make her a bad horse. Sonny throws bucks on the lunge line or when I'm free lunging. Does that make him a bad horse? Definately not. To some horses bucking is a way of getting out of work...where as others it's a way to get out energy...and in Vega's case it's getting out energy (or at least Appy makes it seem that way).

There are some things that I don't like about Vega, built wise...but that makes her, her. I could not picture Vega any other way and she's adorable the way she is.

Most mares will be marish at least once in their lives. It's natural for them....just like at one time in their lives a gelding will have a crush on a mare and will drop when he sees her...will that turn a buyer off? Probably not. I wouldn't turn away from a mare just because she's marish...nor would that make me offer less for her.

For $800 I'd expect either a young horse that hasn't been started yet or a dead broke old horse that can't spook because he can hardly trot.

If I had the money, and Appy was actually selling Vega I'd defiantely buy Vego for $3000 if not more.

$800 would be if Appy needed to get rid of Vega immediately.
Appy, you yourself knows Vega is worth more than that...so don't get insulted :D

Thanks so much Sonny. :)

And Vega doesn't throw a buck to get out of work. She just has a lot of energy and considering the turn out, she can't get rid of it everyday, so yes, when she's feeling fresh, she'll buck.
I rather let a buyer know that, than not tell them at all.

I do realize that depending on what people like in a horse, depends on how they critique her, but i do believe there are nicer ways of saying it, or atleast say what you don't like, rather than just a general area.

Even top show horses buck, moo jumps with all fours in the air like a kangeroo when she is feeling well, whats wrong with that

I think Vega is worth $5000 + if you bought her for $4500 and she has improved, she is definately one of the nicest coloured appys i have ever seen. Its better to put them up for a slightly higher price because who ever buys them will try and get the price down a bit anyway  You could always advertise and see how much interest you get :) and if any suitable owners come along
