My friend has a Appendix mare for sale and she asked me if I could find out how much shes worth. I personally wouldn't pay a dime for this horse, but that's not really the answer she is looking for.:D

The Mare is registered and 8 years old. She is chestnut and around 15.2 hh. She is broke to ride, western (some barrels) and mostly english (jumping, and dressage), but has a real mental issue. She is NOT for a beginner or intermediate rider. My friend can be very harsh with the horse due to the horses disposition at times so the horse can be quite fearful and anticipates punishment. The horse is ummmm.... kinda crazy. She can buck like theres no tomorrow, and sometimes rears and can be hard to stop. She HATES any type of contact on the reins. Her parents were kinda insane too. Though the inexperienced handler does not help the horse really isn't sane. On the plus side she is really really fast, she is beautiful, built like a barrel horse, not spooky, good with other horses, ponies well, not scared of quads and bikes, good with traffic, trailers well, is ok on the ground, and is sound (health wise!). You probably wouldn't want to breed her because of the disposition that passes through this horses lines.

Anyway... She wants to sell the horse for at least $1500.00 when she paid $900.00 for he in the beginning. Since then her training has dropped and she has learned more habits. She has however been to some shows and barrel competitions.

What would you pay for a big project horse like this??

I would never buy a horse like that. There are too many good horses out there that need a home. Unless that horse was Olympic level something I cannot see anyone wanting to buy those problems. I know sometimes high level horses are allowed to get away with some things we would never dream of allowing ( I am not saying it is right but it happens). It is too bad your friend bought the horse in the first place.

when i bought my horse, the old owner said the exact same thing about cutter (execpt the part about being good with other animals). yes, he was terrible for her, but hes a cuddly lovebug with me. so maybe the horse and her current owner just dont have a spark together that she would with another person.
maybe something like that could be mentioned in the discription on the ad.
i bought cutter for 3600.
maybe she could get 1500 if she found the right person

I completely agree. There are to many good horses in this world to have a bad one.

I've seen the horse with other owners and handlers. The one she has now is definitely no match (it only took her 2 years to figure it out), but the horse is not mentally sane (neither was her sire, dam, or grandmother).

Totally agree. Been there done that. If your friends has feelings enough for this animal then best she can do is keep her. Otherwise unless this animal is given and I emphasize given to someone with a great deal of knowledge it will continue to be sold and resold and given away until eventually it ends up in a kill pen, where if rescued the cycle will begin all over again.

If I had to do it over I would have left the "project" with the original owner. After we got her we found out she was a total spaz and nutcase and extremely dangerous.

What type of shows, and how did she do? That is the only thing I could see that could make her worth more than maybe 500$.

For $500 you can buy alot of horses right now. If she looked good and I thought I could fix her I might give 4-500 for her. The thing going against her is her color and her gender. Sorrel mares are hard to sell.

i dont think she is worth more than what she payed in the outset. if her training has dropped (asuming she was worth $900) then she should be worth less now maybe $700 or so? im not good with dollars and your horses over there are cheaper than they are here but i dont think she will be worth $1500

How much was the mare barrel raced? Sounds like shes had too many inexperienced riders yanking her around, etc and is blown up. You could probably give her to someone who wants a challenge horse or someone who could pasture her.

I cant even get $600 for my registered gelding, and he is professionally trained and has learned no new bad habits. :? I would say free, or maybe $100 to ensure a good home. She is registered, but I wouldnt breed a horse like that...
