I was given her at 15months still suckling, wearing a halter but no idea how to lead and she was also bottle fed because it was cuteee.
Needless to say she has been a handful. There were times where I thought it was all too much and I should give up. I had to learn to balance my behavior so that I was 'strict' but fair. I'd be too soft then too hard.
Then we realized that other people dealing with her was making her worse. She was getting unpredictable. She was able to get away with things like turning her bum whilst being fed and minor things that started to escalate.
So now 3 people are allowed to deal with her myself my trainer and another lady who lives there. The girls that feed her are to put food over the fence and not go in. She's just too unoredictable.
That said I've learnt to read her. I know when she's about to try anything which she rarely does with me.
We were going to start her January 11 she would have been 5 but she got spooked in a storm and went through a fence slicing one leg to the bone and basically skinning the other. So there was lots of bandaging and sedating until she came good. Being confined to small yards did not agree with the high strung mare, nor did needles and bandage changes she became needle shy, got over that she had to be sedated as I was the only one doing bandage changes.
Months later she finally recovered. I now have a well mannered horse, well for me anyway. She's back to the affectionate baby she was. She loves scratches especially on the flank withrs and behind the ear.
Mid January we had our first ride. There was a lot of blood sweat and tears to get the but we did get there. She still has attitude but is now enjoyable to handle. There are still restrictions on who handles her it takes a lot to get her respect.
I get the impression that she will always be difficult but she does build relationships with people and then tries her all.
She's my beautiful black brat but I love her and we're getting there.
Our best moment:
Her 3rd ride there was a bit of a breeze which randomly picked up into a mini tornado. I had a friend 'baby sitting' me with 2 horsey friends. I pulled her into a 1rein stop shoved my legs forward sat back and realized I couldn't see her head. Have never been so **** scared normally wind means bolt and buck for her in the paddock. It must have been 20 seconds but felt like 20 mins. She just stood and shook slightly. Tornado disappeared and I remembered to breathe.
I was so proud of her she'd learnt to keep her emotions under control and all the work had paid off!
