She had been under saddle for 30 days and had really only been walked on trails. I spent the next year and a half working on her gait and trail riding at a walk and foxtrot only. When she was four and a half, I started loping her. For the next year, I trail rode more - at a walk, foxtrot, and lope. By this time, she had absolutely perfect manners on the trail. She had amazing endurance, never tried to eat, didn't spook at anything, never ever changed gait without my permission, and listened to vocal commands perfectly. She could run in the direction of the barn and go directly to a walk on a loose rein with just a "walk." I also worked on some bridleless riding during this time. When she was five and a half, I started doing more arena work. Over six months, I taught her how to move her shoulders and hips and how to collect up. I worked on strengthening her hind end, and taught her how to stop on it. I taught her the basic steps of a reining spin, taught her how to pick up the correct lead, and taught her how to counter canter. I tried riding bridleless again, and she performed everything I had taught her perfectly. Then she was six, and I left for Ireland and put her in reining training for the 90 days that I would be gone. When I came back, she had a better lope, a better stop, a better spin, and a nice rollback. For some reason, the trainer failed to teach her flying changes. Over the next few months, I worked her some more and trail rode her some more. I bought a harness and taught her how to ground drive. I practiced with obstacles for competitive trail riding. I taught her how to square up for halter and how to do well in showmanship. Then, when she was six months and nine months old, I took her to her first show. Over two days, I showed her two halter classes, showmanship, two english gaited classes, three western gaited classes, trail, reining, and even barrel racing (just for fun). She was absolutely amazing and won every single class where I didn't screw up the pattern, haha. That was two months ago and I've been giving her a break, only working her about twice a week. I plan to get back into reining very soon, and eventually plan on competing in the MFTHBA Versatility Program.
