About: Romeo The picture of his blind eye and the second picture were taken the day he passed away.
Romeo was me and my sister's first horse. We used to do the craziest stuff with him: chase after our cows, play "indians," and so many other things. When Jordan stopped riding altogether and I switched to English, Romeo became a pasture boy.
He was the sweetest thing in the whole world. Every single time I called to him he would neigh back to me. And feed time was his favorite time of the day! He was so loyal to us and such an amazing horse. Never bucked us off and was so well behaved. You knew that he experienced so much in his lifetime and he was so wise. Oh, did I mention that he was from King Ranch in Texas? :)
Romeo would lay down twice a day because he loved his naps. But one day, when it rained and he laid down, he did something to his leg when he was getting back up. From then on we would have to get him up with our tractor because he could no longer get up himself. When he stopped finishing all of his feed, I knew that he was in pain. The vet said that there's was nothing we could do and he recommended putting him down.
When the time came, we all walked up to Romeo in the pasture to say goodbye. By this time, he hadn't laid down for a couple of days and continued shifting back and forth on his back legs because of the pain. As tears fell down our cheeks, we thanked Romeo for all that he did for us and how he was such a loyal and faithful horse, and we prayed that he would rest peacefully in Heaven. Jordan, my sister, took a lock of his copper mane for memory. We went back inside the house while my grandpa walked him to the corner of our pasture where the vet and his grave awaited him. Romeo passed on May 26, 2011.
Later, my grandpa told me that before he covered him up with dirt, he got the feed that Romeo had left in his bucket that morning, put it in a feed sack, and set it next to his head so he could have his favorite thing in Heaven.
The next morning while I was riding my mare, Venus, I saw an empty feed bag blowing in the wind close to Romeo's grave. I couldn't help but think that was Romeo's feed bag and that he was so peaceful and pain-free that he was able to finish his breakfast.
I love you so much, Romeo, and will always miss you!
