How to make hunter jumps

I would like to get into jumping courses with my horse at home. I don't have any jump standards or wooden poles, jumps cups, etc...is there any cheaper way to make decent jumps? They don't have to be very tall. I do hunters, by the way.

Luckily standards are simple! Go to Home Depot, Lowes, or local hardware/home improvement store and get 4X4's - get attractive ones. Get some outdoor paint, and some PVC poles about 3-4 inches wide by however long you want your jump width to be. If you don't want ot use PVC (although it looks fine if you paint them) you can find 'natural' looking logs on someone's or your property that are rather straight, or just use round poles. You need 2X4's to make the base for the standards. Drill through the 4X4's for your holes, mark them well with a tape measure so they are dead on - AFTER you have completed the base, so that you know it is that high off the ground! Holes go every three inches - make sure the cups hold true to the heighth. I am sure there is a wealth of information and pics on the internet to help you pick what style base you want, they are all relitively the same but the most important part! Paint whatever you make - it will clean it up and help them last. Once you get good at that, you can get fancy and make lattice posts and even a wooden coupe if you desire and have a free day. It is totally doable! Good luck! You need to probably get the cups and pins online. I would think horse.com has them - they have everything! (P.S. - you can nail OR screw, but screws are supposed to last longer and are easier to put in, and don't cause cracks. Don't go cheap on your hardware!)

Luckily for you, the internet has provided many ideas to make jumps! Here's a simple standard idea: Building Jump Standards - HorseChannel.com
For a pole, just go to a hardware store and pick up a 12' long wooden hexagonal shaped pole! Jump cups can be ordered from Dover Saddlery - Quality English Horse Tack & Horse Supplies for the Equestrian.
You can also get creative with fillers and build rolltops, brick walls(laminite on wood boxes),brush boxes, boxes, and gates! Go to a dollar store and they should have fake flowers for you to decorate with :)
