Showing Questions :)

Hello there I am new to the english world all together and have ridden western / trail ridden most of my life, so I would say I have little to know show experience. I am planning to enter a hunter show this June and am wondering if someone could give me a break down of what me and my horse are expected to look like, its a local show so it wont be incredibly competitive however I would like to go all out just for fun! I have two questions to start with 1.) What color are my pants suppose to be ? I have a tan pair but have always wanted a grey pair so was thinking of using this as a excuse to buy them but I am not sure if grey is ok? 2.) Are gloves a requirement ? what color and material should they be?

Now for the horsey part :) Since there are not many english shows in my area and I also ride western I am undecided on pulling my horses mane ... I have had appy's with no manes all my life so I REALLY like my QH mares mane Is there an alternative way to do there manes ? Is it impossible to plait a longer mane ? I will include a few pics of my mare & if you could give me ideas of what to do for her mane and also let me know if you think she would make a half decent hunter that would be great THANKS sorry for the novel !

I'd say to do a scallop braid - they're pretty easy and there are lots of tutorials.

For hunters, tan breeches and a navy jacket are pretty standard. I know in dressage grey breeches are ok, but not sure about hunters.

I can only tell you what the rules are in the association I show under are, Equine Canada, breeches must be a light color, does not state which light colors however. Your horse's mane is uneven, so I would even it up & do as Anabel posted, the scallop braids, very easy to do.

Pants sould be tan or just a little darker. From the shows I have been to grey is not very common I have seen none. For gloves you sometimes dont NEED to wear them but it complets the look and if you are wearing a dark jacket with black gloves it hides alot of hand movment if you hands move alot it is really helpful to beable to hide some. (my first show was really bad at moving my hands:p). You can look up some pictures on google for hunter riders to see the whole look.

Even out the mane then braid and you should not have to change much more of the mane.

Oh, one last thing....your horse looks so gorgeous!!!!

Good luck on your shows!!!!

Tan/beige breeches in the hunters, no grey. And you will need black gloves to complete the look. Doesn't really matter what material, but most show gloves are leather of some sort. Even up your horse's mane, it is really uneven. You won't need to braid for a schooling show, but her mane should be pulled. Short manes are acceptable in western disciplines as well, but long manes are not acceptable in english disciplines, so you are better off keeping it short if you plan on showing both.

I would not go with grey breeches, tan/khaki is best. I would definitely get gloves, black. Doesn't have to be leather but shouldn't be super see through (like really open mesh).

As for the mane. If it's just an open show then you might just want to even it out a bit and leave it alone. If you aren't willing to cut it then I would just leave it at that. I really don't think that a scallop or running braid would look appropriate on a QH. That's more like a Morgan or Arab style of braiding to me. JMHO.

Very pretty girl! Remember to have fun!

No grey breeches!! Tan is best. Show jackets also tend to look neater if gloves are worn with them.

As for your horse, for any show that's a regular schooling show you'll want to stick with traditional hunter braids on her mane. There are tons of tutorials floating around the internet and they're not too hard to do. I think she'll make a fine hunter. Good luck :)

I wouldn't do grey breeches, stick with the tan :) For gloves, they definitely complete the look. The fancier ones are black leather, but I like the cheapy black mesh SSG gloves because they're cool and they don't turn my hands black. Just make sure gloves are black in color.

If you're serious about showing English, pull her mane. If just dabbling then I would do a French braid for her mane and have it braided as tightly and neatly as possible.

I live in a very western area and ride in little shows and I always do a tight french braid for my horse (although he is a Morgan). I know both my instructors do that. It may not technically be correct but in the shows around me that seems to be what everyone does.
