Chicken Farming: What went wrong?

So my dad took up chicken farming awhile back, and so far we haven't had any luck... the chickens just won't lay any eggs!
We don't know if maybe we're planting them too close together, or maybe they're too deep!

It's a joke my dad always tells people. Except sometimes he replaces chickens with ducks or cows or whatever other animal he feels like.
