So, I'm not into english riding, as in I don't know much about it. I do almost always ride in and english saddle lol. So, glancing through some sale adds here, along with ones on other websites. I've seen many many four year olds listed as jumping 3' and up (exm. 3'9"), is this ok? I've always thought they shouldn't be started jumping until four, if so what are these four year olds doing jumping 3'???? I've kinda always thought of it was I wouldn't have my just turned four year old going high speed around barrels, so why would I be having it jump to any high level..... A log on the ground, maybe 1'... And if they're jumping this now, wouldn't they had to have started jumping younger than four? And I know its not really the age, its when the knees "come togeather" but I've never heard of that happening before 4years, and I've known horses that its happened later than that. So, not judging any of you jumpers out there... just a simple barrel racer and trail rider that loves the english saddle And would like to hear opinions/explinations before forming my own opinion
This being said I've also had a bad experinace in jumping to soon lol. Young horse with bone chips in her knees because my sister and her friend decided to take her out and jump a large long on 2yr old filly barely started under saddle. They seem to have no effect, other than shes 9and has arthritis I doubt would otherwise be there. And shes now only used for light trail riding
I think it's a dumb idea. Most people who breed horse for competitive jumping don't start riding their horses until 4, let alone jump them. It's one thing to introduce them to new things, like you mentioned, walking over a log, walking over a 1' cross rail. Walking.
And it's not just the physical damage you can do to a horse by overloading them with obstacles but the emotional. They're still babies, or in "elementary school", people are just concerned about money and don't have the patience to slowly build a horse up anymore.
