well I have had 2 bad falls that I can think of. I will post a photo of the fence when I get home lol
Anyways, I had one when I was in a race as a jockey on a quarter horse mare. Well, race is almost over, we are in 2nd, there is no room in front of us for another horse, or so I thought. I look next to me and a horse shoots by me, cuts in front of my mare, my mare checks herself and with my weight already being forward on her I end up on her neck. I hung onto her neck for a few seconds and her legs are hitting my chest because she is still running. All I remember thinking was "I can let go and cover my face and hope for the best, or I can hold on and pray she stops". I let go. I don't remember if I covered my face, I don't remember getting kicked, but I got kicked in the face by her when she ran over me. I went to ER and luckily had a broken nose only. I also remember being pissed because I didn't get to ride in my next race LOL but the doc then told me that if she had kicked me a fraction of an inch higher she would have shattered both my eye sockets, my skull, and I would most likely have died from the kick. If she had kicked me about an inch lower she would have completely shattered my jaw. Luckily she hit me where she did, and I escaped with a fractured nose (barely noticeable), and some bruised ribs.
My personal worst fall so far was 2 years ago. I was getting on a filly that I was training and it was her first time being mounted. She was terrified of horse flies, it was mid-summer, and I was the only one at the barn at the moment. BAD COMBO....well, I got on her, and she walked a few steps on her own and she was fine, then I saw a horsefly land on her neck and just remember thinking "OH CRAP..." Well, she jumped a 5 foot fence with me on her and me not expecting it flew off the back of her. I broke the fence rail which was a 2x8 pine board on my ribs and back. If there hadn't been a knot in that fence board I would have broken my back to the point where I would have probably been paralyzed. I don't remember landing or anything and was out for about 10 minutes. I know because I looked at my watch when I got on her and when I woke up. I ended up standing, untacking her myself, and drove to ER. I cracked 3 ribs, severely bruised my spine in 3 vertebrae, sprained my hand and bruised my bones in the heel of my hand, and bruised the bones in my elbow. I escaped pretty safely and by the grace of God.
I have two falls that have left me permanantly scarred. One, I was riding bareback and the horse bolted towards a fence, faked me out, he went one way and ended up running over me stepping on my thigh tearing the muscle. I still have a torn muscle in the shape of a horse hoof on my thigh. It looks awful lol. The other fall happened on my 2nd pony. We were running poles and I fell off and the base of the pole hit me in the back, permamantly moving one of my vertebrae. You can still go straight down my spine and it will stick out.
You have to learn how to fall before you can learn how to ride~
