Has your horse encountered all the jumps that are in the cross country course? (water jumps, ledges.. not sure of the technical name though, etc)
I would suggest wearing a safety vest.
As far as tack, an eventing saddle would be good, but i'm sure you can get away with a jumping or CC saddle. Possibly even an AP.

i will be setting all those jumps up in the summer, throughout the trails.
Well you can certainly give it a shot!
Just make sure your horse doesn't get into a habit of (if you jump with poles that can come down) of hitting into the poles.
Well I would not advise you to do a XC course unless you can comfertably jump 2'6" in and out of an arena, and your horse will navigate water without any hesitation, and he(or she) can jump up and down a bank jump. (this looks more novice-training ish)
You will need to be able to keep a good canter for at least 3-4 minutes. Tack and equipment wise you will wear tall feild boots, good pair of riding pants, a polo shirt, eventing vest(try to get one that covers your rib cage, and on the back to the end of your spine. You should also try to get one that is ASTM Beta Test 2000 Level 3 cirtified!) and a good helmet. Keep in mind also that you will be compeating in a dressage and show jumping test too! For horse tack you will have to have a jumping or AP saddle and a good bridle with an aproved bit. You will need a large XC jockey whip(no matter how good your horse is, you need a whip JIC) And I would advise using brushing boots and bell boots. You might also want to get a breastplate to keep your saddle from slipping.
Its worth it tho. Just make sure you familiarize your horse with the obsticles and make sure you are both fit. I nearly died of exhaustion after the second obsticle first time I did a xc course!!

Thanks for the info! I didn't know about the heights of the jumps and everything!
