There was this girl in my lesson on Wednesday, riding this horse Gus, whose old and kinda slow. He's very clutzy, and she was basically SMASHING him into jumps. We were all like, ready to slap her. In all seriousness, it looked like she was TRYING to miss the course.

She'd turn him at the jumps and then not steer or try to hold him together at all. She was leaning on his kneck and her heel was way up; I have no idea how she even got into my lesson.
I really hate when people who have no idea what they're doing are aloud to ruin a perfectly good horse. =P

Yeah Im glad I cant say the same for my stable, because my instructor corrects our mistakes every time we make them, and builds a longer term of relationship. I think it is also important to educate this rider though, and be a bit more positive. She needs to understand exactly what she is doing incorrectly

the instructor was being really nice about it. If I were her I would've been screaming! She's just like, "If you're leaning on him like that, how's he supposed to jump? Sit up all the way and try to get your heel down" and just let her try again until she got it. [never happened. =P]

Personally - if the instructor didn't stop her, then she was as much as fault as the girl riding. It sounds like the girl was not ready for that level of jumping and might need to go back to some of the basics first and it is the instructor's duty to say so, IMO.

I agree with Cat, the instructor has a duty to do something there. And this could happen in any discipline. I cou;d imagne it happening with a reining or cutting horse too easily.

yeah, i do agree; you're right, she should've done something. But yelling would've startled the horses and made the girl feel pressured, so she wouldn't of wanting to try again, and she was trying to talk her through it as best as she could.. But if I were her I would've grabbed that horse, forced her off, and told her to take him back to the barn.

I agree with everything everyone has been saying, and I also agree with whoever (sorry, too lazy to go back and check) said that they hate it when people blame it on the horse! It is hardly ever the horse's fault- usually the rider did something that messed the horse up, not the other way around.

And you wonder why lesson horses go sour and aren't good for the more advanced riders.
The whole "beginner in the wrong class" thing happened to me too. I honestly have NO idea why this girl was in our lesson. Constantly leaning on the horses neck(like she was in 2-point the entire lesson) heels up, couldn't get the horse to canter. Thankfully the instructor moved her.

I find that female instructors aren't as harsh as male instuctors, maybe that's why she didn't say anything?
Thats why I like my instuctor because he says it like it is........and lets us jump high haha.
