Equitation Class

What tack is allowed/ preferred for equitation classes? I'm a jumper rider, so I'm not totally familiar with what's acceptable.

Also, what do the judges specifically look for (horse + rider)? How should I ride my course?

Thanks! :)

I'm showing in equitation over fences, not dressage. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

What is the Equitation Judge is looking For?

Equitation is really tough. You have to have a horse that makes YOU look nice. It's all too subjective for my taste! (i am a jumper rider, through and through)
Get ready to wear those Monaco tall boots and your Hermes show coat! Haha! They expect you to look your best, and for your riding to be even better.

I've got all my tack polished and ready to go! I plan on trying really hard... haha. I'm a jumper rider too, I've done eq flat classes and won, but never one over fences. What kind of nosebands are allowed? All of the things mentioned in the article sound pretty straight forward... Now to perfect it!

Typical equitation class apparel includes a show jacket, white show shirt, tan colored pants, belt, polished tall boots, & a clean black helmet(Charles Owens are most often seen). Make sure all of your tack is very clean, if your horse wears splint or ankle boots, make sure they're clean leather(or leather/sheepskin) boots. Generally, there is many rollbacks that you want to make the tightest turn that you can do cleanly. Equitation is suppose to be based on your position & cleanliness of getting around the course, although today it is getting closer to being based more closely to a hunter course(which makes me mad!) & less about your true position. Still make sure you have a tight leg & quiet, still body.

I'm pretty sure they do not allow figure 8 or flash nosebands, just the plain noseband. Although if you are not doing an upper level show, they might have different rules.

Equitation varies from place to place and from show to show. Our equitation out here at the A rated shows might be a bit different than your own... here you will be disqualified if your bridle has the nose flash (figure 8) attachment in a hot second! However, I have watched vids of people riding equitation rounds in other parts of the US where they have flashes on their horses... so you just kinda' gotta' know what your show allows for EQ OF rounds.
If I wasn't sure, I would be ready with all my hunter tack. Regular english bridle, approved hunter bit, saddle cut fleece pad, and no boots (for the horse). This way I would be darn sure that they couldn't doc me for anything! Haha!

Alright, I've got my jacket, shirt, helmet (COGR8!), leather boots for the horse (Which I bought yesterday, SO STOKED), my boots, sheepskin half pad and I've got a plain noseband kicking around, so we should be set!
