help with my horses confidence!

hey guys, thanks for taking a look at my thread. I'm going jumping tommorrow for the first time on my new horse (i have jumped alot before but this is the first time jumping ON my new horse). I have been told he's not the best jumper and has to be forced over jumps or he'll refuse. Pleeeease does anyone have any advice on how I can help him enjoy jumping? Are there any exercises I need to do or in any way I could improve my riding to stop him refusing?

It is not possible to create a fenced off area so that he can only jump the jump and can't run out.

Any help would be extremely appreciative. Thankyou. Xx

building confidence on the ground will help under saddle as well.... in my opinion, that is where I would start.

A horse will refuse a fence because he/she isn't confident, and the rider isn't riding in a way that makes the horse feel confident either... which results in slamming on the breaks, or running out.

Life seems mighty precious, when there's less of it to waste.
