Hay bales make good sturdy jumps that are safe.

One good hting about jumps is that you don't necessarily need standards...

Any of these can also be used as "standards" with poles on top of or resting on for cavaletti/cross rail style jumps:

Hay bales/straw

Empty 55 gallon drums (two feet 6 inches lying down, 3 feet standing up)..standing up can also be used with two poles to create about a 16 inch crossrail or lying over top the barrel, a full 3 foot jump.

Overturned 5-gallon buckets

Stools or chairs

Mounting blocks

Cement blocks (as "standards" vice fillers..don't want the horse hitting these)

Traffic cones (fillers..hard to use as standards).

Plastic window boxes can be filled with plastic flowers and used as fillers

This time of year, corn stalks make great fillers to practice brush jumps.

Use PVC pipe for poles..they come in various sizes, can be painted or kept white, are light, durable and gentle on legs.

Simple jump standards like these are easy to make, although I would use 2x4's for the bottoms to make them sturdier. Building Jump Standards

Dont use PVC if it falls and the horse steps on it will break and horse will get cut. My cousin saw it happen and yes the pole was filled with sand. Wood fence poles are 5 bucks at lowes much safer =)

If you have poles, chairs work well for the wings :)..

We use wooden fence posts and concrete blocks. The blocks are great because they have 2 different holes in them to increase jump size, and you can put one on top of the other. If the horse hits into the wood they fall down easily so he won't hurt his feet, too.
