I know this is a stupid question, but I am wondering how you know how high a horse can safely jump? How do you know if they can clear it?

To 'test' you horse, free jumping is great, just start at a low x-bar and keep raising it, if he knocks, depends how bad he knocks it, it would hurt a little, just knows not to do it again!

All my horses, from 12.2hh - 16hh can jump 90cm+ (2'9"+) easy. The 14-16hh horses have cleared 130cm (4'2) I buy my horses for jumping though, so if I were to get a QH or something with really short legs then they wouldn't be able to jump as high, Attach a photo of your horse and I'll critique his jumping confo :)

You defintaly wouldn't just look at a horse and say yep, it can clear "blah", every horse needs working up, so they're confident and so you know what they're capable of.

Taking a step back, I say you know how high your horse can safely jump because your very-experienced jumping trainer told you that's how high he can jump.

Just because the horse can clear it, doesn't mean it should, especially with a rider on its back. I'd like to jump, but I know better than to just start taking him over jumps and moving it higher and higher. I could seriously do some damage without a knowledgable trainer standing there.

I've never trained my horses to jump, but it turns out that my colt can clear the bottom rail of a 3-rail vinyl fence (while taking out the top two plus a post), and the gelding I grew up on can clear the hood of a car going 50-mph and trot on home with only minor bumps and bruises. And my Arabian will get eaten by the trolls that live under the jumps, so he jumps away from them rather than over.
