improving jumping...

I love jumping, but wont me jumping for a while as my horse is still learning flatwork etc, after being out in the paddock for 2-3 months. Any way when were up to the jumping stage of things... what can I do to help him learn to jump again??? Should I be doing work with trotting poles in a few months before we start jumping???

Focus on the flat work for now (always, but especially now). Concentrate on getting your horse right now, on the flat, and you won't have to work very hard for the jumps once you start back. Trot poles are great for helping your horse learn to balance, but focus more on the "before and after" the poles. Do lots of transitions, bending, circles, etc. Use this flat work time to your advantage to get him "right" now. Good luck!
