I have a 15hh purbred Quarter horse, that i would love to start jumping on. However she is slighty down hill, her trot and canter are fine and she has been shown up to 2'9 in hunters and level 2 dressage but her jumping career was awhile back. I have taken her over small vertacles and x-rails but when moved up the jump to 1.5-2.3 ft she overjumps it. She will jump fine at the trot but at the canter is where things go wrong. Im not sure if its because shes downhill or the fact that she over jumps but when we come down from the jumps her hind legs come over to high and it is very uncomfortable.

MY ID mare is a bit 'downhill' - low withers and huge butt
She was never really good for anything over 3ft 6 anyway as she didn't have the scope for it but the driving power from those huge quarters can make them feel a bit like a rocket propelled force!!!
I cant say that she ever over jumped though - so it might be that your horse is doing it out of worry of hitting the pole - maybe try increasing the height very gradually to improve confidence
