materials for jumps (barrels etc)--where do i get them??

I recently bought a quite talented showjumper. I am now at the stage where id love to start a bit of jumping with him, however I have not got jumps.
I have various ideas on how to make them, but not the materials.

Where can I get things like barrels and tires from??

You can get old tires from a dump or tire store. They are usually more than happy to give them away.

Tree stumps, milk crates, upturned buckets, a few bricks piled up...and so on :) there are a number of things you can use that you will find around the house. Where you could get the other things I don't know. Here in australia I would know where to go but that doesnt help you much does it :)

Go to your local hardware store and build yourself poles and standards.
PVC pipe works well, it is light and easy to carry - just fill it up with sand so it has a bit more of a weight and put caps on the ends (so if your horse knocks the jump, the PVC poles won't roll away). They're also smooth, which is better if your horse knocks or chips.

You can also build your own standards there. It wouldn't be hard, you just need to look at the wood and find the right thickness and build a base. Drill holes into the standards, and find the materials you'd need to make cups or pegs. You can even make caveletties. If you have an experienced handyman around the house, maybe show him some pictures of wooden standards and get his help with the project.

You want to be safe in your jumping, not always using makeshift courses of brooms and lawn chairs. :)

Over the years I've used things like lawn chairs and broom handles for jumps a hundred times or more and personally, I think they are safer. Everything is so light and doesnt pose any problems if they are knocked down. But then, that's just my opinion ;)

Lawn chairs can be dangerous just in case the horse runs through it or over it or something. Brooms are light, so they can't be bad, but the trouble just is, that if you're jumping height and the horse knocks, 1) it's easier for the broom to fall 2) it's easier for the broom to turn and get caught in the horse's legs or trip the horse. This probably doesn't happen much, but you want a jump with some kind of weight.

Really like, it's not horrible. It's not something I wouldn't do.. but I think I'd have more fun designing my own colorful jumps and stuff :P

Maybe you can go into a forest or something and cut down a decent sized tree and haul it home to jump. I think that'd be fun.

You can get wood, and paint it crazy colours, (and sparkly blue as water)

Also, plastic trays (maybe flower ones) fill them with water and put rubber ducks in lol

Are you a show jumper, or a working hunter (i think you mentioned but I can't remember )
