Need Some Creative Ideas!

Hey all! So I found out this weekend that my horse is a wimp whenever I put any decorations on a jump! So what are some things that you all put on your jumps to help make your horses braver?

Cooler on the jump, tarp (weighted) under the jump for a liverpool, dollar store flowers, haloween decorations, christmas decorations - don't forget to decorate the standards as well as the jump, pumkins, pool noodles,
Just keep safety in mind (is it safe to hit and/or land on)
I had a free range chicken that was notorious for popping up in the middle of jumps - now that was bombproofing!

I've put rugs over jumps, jumped square hay bales wrapped in bin liners, used traffic cones as fillers, used empty beer kegs as fillers, and have made working hunter style fillers using boot racks and privet hedge trimmings as brush. But same as above - make it safe and secure so that if your horse knocks or runs through it, it won't hurt itself. One of my friends made a tiger trap once using an old piece of wooden fencing, but it was a bit rotten so when the horse misjudged the takeoff, it put its foot through it and had some nasty splinter wounds up its foreleg.

I've jump all sorts of crazy things. You just have to make sure whatever you're jumping is safe, don't want any accidents. Dallas has always been a very brave jumper, but with the extra work I've put in with strange jumps he doesn't bat an eye at anything we jump at shows.

Besides from crazy colored poles and standards we've jumped:

- tarps
- flowers
- hay bales
- miscellaneous decorations
- liver pools
- traffic cones
- brush boxes
- wild colored saddle pads draped over the top rail

There are more I'm sure I'm forgetting.

Ah yes.. Going through the same thing with Candy- new horse who is a green jumper (at least with scary things). You can go to a craft store and get plastic flowers, stick them in styrofoam and have a little flower box. Attach streamers (anything works, thick ribbon, twine, paper taped on jumps, etc.) and jump it, although do it inside or on a non windy day first! Other than repainting jumps scary colors and different types of jumps (small coop like jumps, like this but miny, small enough to walk over at first http://www.rideirishhorses.com/RockyJumpCoop260.jpg) that's about all I can think of right now other than what people said. OH, most terrifying thing, plastic animals. Dogs, foxes, cats, etc. are awfully terrifying to horses, just place them by jumps. You could probably go out and buy a couple big stuffed animals cheap somewhere and place them by/underneath a jump if you can't find plastic ones..

Don't forget the scariest of all! PLASTIC BAGS! They can be tied to poles, standards, weighted with rocks, etc.

He's not a wimp, his sense of self preservation is at work. When you add new decorations show them to him from all angles so he sees them with one eye, both eyes, and the other eye. Encourage him to touch them.
