Not a world record but the new British side saddle jumping record set a 1.90m - just over 6 feet
The rider had only recently taken up sidesaddle and the horse is blind in one eye!!
Michaela Bowling soars high with sidesaddle - Horses International
The first sidesaddle steeplechase since 1921 was held in Feb of this year, the sport seems to be making a comeback
Its one of those things that should carry a 'You don't have to be mad to do this but it helps' plaque.

I've never sat on a side saddle and have to admit it looks a real challenge, I have this fear that I'd fall off sideways!!
I cant even imagine jumping that height 'astride'
Makes you realize just how tough and gutsy the 'ladies' were back in the days when they all rode and hunted like that - not exactly the fragile fainting flowers we tend think of

Thanks AF, I was hoping we'd get some Forum members who'd either given it a go or were actively riding sidesaddle
I'd imagine having a forward going horse might be an advantage?
How do you actually move the horse forward?
No right or left leg cues either - is there a way around that?

Yes, you carry a cane or a whip in your right hand. You lay them on the horse as if it were your leg.

When I rode in an event, there was a hard rule that you could not carry a whip in dressage.............except if you were sidesaddle. The dressage judge did not know that rule since when did you ever need to know it? She blew the whistle to eliminate me. I had to assure her that there was an exception for sidesaddle. I punished her by winning the event....I notice that the exception is no longer written in the rule book, that I could find.
