I want to start my horse on jumping, I know about starting with cavalettis, but is there anything else I should know about? And what can I use for ground poles if I don't have anything like that available?

You can get cheapo large PVC pipes to use as trot poles. They work really well and if they break, it's ok they don't cost that much.

I'm really not a fan of PVC poles, simply because when left out in the sun they age worse than wood, and they don't break cleanly, they end up with jagged edges that are really dangerous.

I prefer wooden poles, you can get them from your local hardware place, I think I paid about $10 each for mine, which are shorter and skinnier (and easier to carry!) than fullsize jumping poles but that doesn't make any difference.

But if you don't want to fork out for poles just yet I used trimmed down branches for years with no problems
