Question trotting or jumping a cross rail

Okay.... your at a horse show... there are 6 people in your cross rail class. You can trot the 4 jumps or you can canter them. You go once around the 4 jumps.

So riders one through five canter the 4 cross rails. Then the sixth rider trots over the cross rails.

Do you think that person will get last place because she did not canter the jumps like the other riders did?

Or will she place well because she has good form while the other riders forms arent so good.

help..

I know the real answer to that. The winner is the rider who trotted. This exact thing happened in my friend's class last year. Everyone else cantered and had missed distances, unstraight riding, etc. The last rider wasn't sure about her horse, so she very methodically trotted straight to every fence. She felt like an idiot, but ended up winning the class because it was clear that she was attempting to ride effectively.

Agreed. It's about who rides competently and effectively, not who wants to look more advanced than they really are.

If the rules say that trotting is not to be penalized the winner is the person who rode it the best regardless of gait. I've seen some trot courses that were terrible and some that were great. If trotting is penalized then unless one of those cantering circled or had a refusal the trotting will get last place.
