Question What kind of boots should I put on my horse?

My little guy likes to knock his hooves on the wooden plank that I use for jumping. I have bell boots but they don't really serve any protection Also, are boots or wraps better as far as jumping goes? Thanks :)

Do you mean hoof boots or leg boots?

Polo wraps don't really give support to the leg, they're to prevent brushing or the horse clipping the back of their legs when you work on extension/bringing their back legs underneath them

I have 3 sets of jumping boots... lol

I mostly use my Pegasus Air Boots, love them
I rarely use my SMBs because they get so hot.
I also have a pair of open-front leather brushing boots, those I use for XC if I'm doing anything with water

As for hoof boots... I don't think you need to protect your horse from their hooves hitting a rail.

I wouldn't bother with bell boots, they're more to prevent hoof injuries due to over reaching with the back hooves or stepping on them with the other side as far as I understand.

Why is he knocking the poles? Is he just being lazy, are the heights too big, is your plank heavy? If you suspect that he is just being lazy and not picking up his hooves then I definitely wouldn't offer bell boots, that just lessens the impact and in my mind could cause him to be more lazy because hitting your pole doesn't cause any discomfort, therefore why should he have to work harder to jump higher?

I use open fronts when I jump, I only have cheap neoprene inner ones but they do the job just fine while still allowing some air flow in there, otherwise I use tendon boots. Like Lexiie said, Polo wraps don't really support the leg

I personally wouldn't use any boots until he learns to wake up & lift his feet. By putting boots on him you're essentially cushioning the blow & teaching him to be lazy. A lazy jumper is an unsafe jumper. You want him to approach every jump in an awake forward manner. If he's sluggish up to the jump he's always going to knock. Some horses when allowed to constantly knock the jump always will or others get so turned off from it the refuse all together.

I seriously messed up my mare over verticals after she knocked a heavy pole really hard. You couldn't believe the work it took me just to get her to jump little cross poles again >.>
