I have a 3 year old mare and was wondering when i should start jump;ing her. I have 3 years of experiance with green horses jumping but i am worried that if i start to soon i will ruin her legs as she is still growing.
You shouldn't be barrel racing or jumping her anytime soon. She's still growing. You WILL damage her legs if you continue barrel racing her at this age. Posted via Mobile Device
General rule is to wait at least until they are 5 yo. A small and very occasional jump isn't bad. But consistent jumps damage their growth plates and joints. Posted via Mobile Device
I have jumped a 7yo, 8yo, and a 15yo. The 15yo was the hardest as she was abused in her before home. I know i shouldnt even be thinking of jumping now but i'd like to have a sceduale to know what years i should start weaning her into it. So from the posts above i should start when she is 6 to be safe?
i like to start horses jumping at 4yo, as long as their flat work is good and they are balanced at all gaits. i start jumping them over poles, xrails, and 2ft verticals. once they are 5 i generally will stick around 2'6".
the key is to make sure they are balanced enough and trained enough to start jumping, and then not jumping them too hard or too often.
